Your consultation preparation guide

Read here or print a copy to bring to your visit. This is an original preparation checklist, separate from the published book.

  1. Start with what you want to understand

Write down your main concern: a PSA result, screening, urinary changes, sexual function, or a treatment decision. Bring your three most important questions.

  2. Put your records together

If available, bring previous PSA results with dates, reports from imaging or biopsy, and a list of medicines and supplements. Ask the office how to provide records securely.

  3. Questions worth asking

    • What does my PSA result mean in the context of my history and earlier results?
    • Should I repeat a test, and what would change the next step?
    • If imaging or biopsy is being considered, what question would it answer, and what are its benefits and risks?
    • Are my urinary symptoms and my cancer-screening questions separate issues?
    • How could each option affect urinary function, sexual function, recovery and follow-up?
    • What is the plan after this visit, and when should I contact the office again?
  4. Turn the conversation into a plan

Before leaving, ask which next step you have agreed on, who will arrange it, how results will be communicated, and when follow-up is due. Keep a copy of your plan for your own records.
